About beers · 6 August 2025

Beer isn't just a gastronomic pleasure; it's also interesting from a nutritional point of view. It offers components that can be good for your health when enjoyed in moderation.

The nutritional properties of beer

B vitamins

Beer is a source of several B vitamins, such as folic acid (important for the formation of red blood cells), vitamin B6 (protein metabolism and the production of neurotransmitters) and vitamin B12 (neurological health and DNA formation). As part of a balanced diet, they help fight fatigue.

Minerals

It contains minerals such as magnesium (muscle and nerve function), calcium (bone and dental health) and potassium (fluid balance and heart function), all essential for a range of physiological processes.

Antioxidants

It includes phenolic compounds capable of neutralising free radicals, which is associated with a lower incidence of chronic diseases when consumption is moderate.

The basic ingredients and their properties

Beer is made from four essential ingredients:

  • Water: roughly 96% of its volume; its mineral content shapes the final flavour.
  • Malt: usually from barley; it provides fermentable carbohydrates, minerals, amino acids and B vitamins.
  • Hops: give aroma and bitterness, and act as a natural preservative thanks to their antibacterial properties.
  • Yeast: turns the sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide, and shapes the aromas and flavours.

Beer and wellbeing

Hops are credited with relaxing properties that may aid rest, and the social setting of enjoying a beer in moderation can help ease stress. These possible effects should always be understood within the frame of responsible drinking.

Myths about calories

A typical beer contains between 30 and 45 calories per 100 ml, a moderate amount. The so-called "beer belly" is usually down more to a high overall calorie intake and a sedentary lifestyle than to the beer itself. For those who avoid alcohol, alcohol-free beer keeps many of its nutritional properties.

Drinking in moderation

As a rough guide, moderate drinking is defined as up to 2–3 small glasses a day for men and 1–2 for women. Going beyond these amounts can raise the risk of liver disease, cardiovascular problems, alcohol dependence and mental health issues. The key is balance.
